Six nights at Hotel Sugar Beach

After the long and tiring bus ride from San José to Hotel Sugar Beach, it was nice to just relax with doing nothing. We wanted to have a bit nicer and relaxing hotel for the beginning of our honeymoon so we decided to come to Sugar Beach for six nights. The hotel has bungalows with two rooms. We had one with sea view (#22) and it is nice to sit on the terrace, having a cup of coffee and looking at the sea.  The rooms and hotel were good with few minor shortcomes. The restaurant is on a tiny hill with a nice view to the sea. Since we were here during the low season (27.8. - 2.9.2016), there were only few other guests during our stay and it was quiet and relaxing. The beach is big enough for the hotel. It is a black sand beach but with a lot of rocks in the waterline and we found only one narrow sand path through the rocks out to the sea. There is not much to do at Sugar Beach, but that is one of the reasons we chose it. It is a great place for relaxation (if you don’t mind 24/7 sound of waves ;) ). The hotel has boogie boards to rent for a price of 2$/h. We rented it almost every day for an hour or two, and even Edda started to like playing with it ;D The waves at the beach are not big enough for surfing so a boogie board is a good option if you want some action in the sea.

We were lucky enough to see fireflies on two nights during our stay. And not just a few, but trees and bushes covered in them. It was like watching a fairy tale movie. If the fireflies were not present, great thunderstorms and crazy lightning shows appeared. We have never experienced such thunderstorms. The entire sky lighted up every 5th second and the sound was extremely loud when it was above us!

We have seen some other animals during our stay in Sugar Beach as well. Some really annoying birds visited us on every single breakfast and lunch and tried to catch our food. Last night we saw a raccoon that tried to beg for our food for about 15 minutes or so. There was also a pack of monkeys climbing around. You notice them latest when the leader makes a growling noise.

Other animals are small and big lizards that are just wondering around the hotel area. They are completely harmless and Edda was happy to notice that they did not appear inside the room :p Overall, we have only had one cockroach in our room, and Edda has not seen any spiders yet! :D There are some types of big hawks flying around as well. We thought they were eagles at first since they are so big, but apparently they are not.

Even though it has rained every day, we have managed to enjoy the sun as well. Usually the mornings and around noon have been sunny at least. The receptionist told us that there are several micro climates around here, meaning that it can be sunny over here and rain a few kilometers away.
The roads over here are very curvy and can have very steep up- and downhills. We experienced this ourselves yesterday when we rented a scooter for one day. We rented the scooter through our hotel and it worked well. A guy brought the scooter to us in the morning and picked it up once we had come back. The rental cost was $40 (24h) plus gas (few dollars). We drove to Brasilito and stopped at Conchal beach. The water was more still than on our beach, so it was very relaxing. It is so lovely, when the sea water is so warm! We then drove further away to Tamarindo to check out where our next pit stop would be. We are going to stay at Coral Reef Surf Hostel for at least 4 nights. We went to the reception to ask how we could come the easiest from Sugar Beach to Tamarindo. The receptionist was interested in our last name and the reason was that she is Dutch :D She welcomed us already, even though we were not coming there until few days. Markus was happy to notice that there was a real coffee shop in Tamarindo where he got a tasty double espresso. Markus has not been very happy with the quality of the coffee at Hotel Sugar Beach… :p

Now we have to pack all our stuff for tomorrow's move. We have not yet gotten used to moving around and packing and packing our stuff, but we have plenty of time practicing on that ;)
