Our journey around the world starts in 3 weeks!

We got married last Saturday!!! Wuuhuuu! :) The day was absolutely perfect and we would've loved it to continue for days.

Well, this blog is not about our wedding, but about our next journey together. We are starting our trip around the world in three weeks. This blog will tell you about our preparations, thoughts and experiences. We write this blog to share our experiences with our family and friends but also hope this will help others that are planning a similar trip or wondering about a specific country.

The countries we are going to visit are Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Peru, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand, Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam. We have pitstops in Miami Sydney and Hong Kong. We have bought a One World "around the world" package through Kilroy Travels. They were very helpful in finding good flights and in suggesting different activities in different countries. In the end, we ended up booking only the Inca Trail in Peru and decided to check other activities once we are in the locations.

Our trip around the world

We have also booked the first nights in Miami and Costa Rica. The first place in CR is just for relaxation. :) Few words about planning:

  1. Accommodation: If you're planning to stay in a city where something big is happening at the same time, it is wise to book accommodation very early. For example, we are staying in Rio during New Year's 2016 - 2017 and noticed that the prices can be ridiculously higher than normally. We found one hotel on Copacabana for 195€/night during "off-season" and 1920€/night at New Year's! Others were not that bad, but almost all Copacabana beach view hotel rooms started from 1000€/night, so obviously we cannot afford such prices. We found a flat from AirBnB with a nice sea views so we have a place to stay there. Also, finding a nice place during a peak season can be challenging if left to the final minute. Another thing that we have already noticed is that prices for accommodation differ depending on the website - i.e. use some time to search for the best prices.
  2. Travel insurance: Since we are from Finland, we are used to having a travel insurance that covers almost everything from tooth ache to heart attacks and shark bites. We discussed with our insurance company and were rather shocked how much the insurances really cost. After consulting with our friends, we realized that they really DO cost that much. A few things that you should consider/think about when checking the coverage of your insurance are 1) is there a certain hight limit above sea level when the insurance does not cover any longer, 2) does the insurance cover e.g. hot springs and other nature spas, 3) heart attacks, 4) medical flight (it can cost over 100 000 €), etc.
  3. Vaccinations: Check early which vaccinations you need, because some of them cannot be taken at the same time as others and you can run out of time. For our trip, we needed to take Yellow fever, hepatitis A & B, Japanese Encephalitis, Cholera and Typhoid fever. Also, we need to take some malaria medicine when travelling e.g. to Amazon or Cambodia.

So, we have mainly booked the flights between countries but otherwise we try not to plan too much to avoid a tight schedule and have more possibilities for extempore places and trips. We had some thinking to do when we were planning from where to start. We are leaving in end of August and our first plan was to start from Vietnam, but there is rain season then, and yes - It is raining a lot! When checking weather reports, Dominican Republic started to look good. Because of the hurricane peak in the Dominicans in September (even if according to statistics, it's unlikely for a hurricane to hit the Dominicans), we started to check how Costa Rica looks like during September. Luckily the Northern part of Costa Rica is not in the worst rain season area at the time so we decided to start from there. Most of the places we want to visit are located in the North or mid CR.

We try keep you updated as often as possible, but we are also on our honeymoon ;)
